The Genealogy Blog Party – FAQs

How do I join the Genealogy Blog Party?

When the GBP collection is open for submissions, a little, blue button that says “Add your link” will appear on the page. Click the button, fill out the form, and click DONE to add your link to the collection. It will automagically appear in the collection (after it is moderated)!

When should I publish the post on my blog?

You can publish your post anytime before or during the period when the collection is open. The only requirement is that you add your link during the submission dates.

Can I use a post that I wrote before the GBP theme was announced?

Of course! If you have already written a post that fits one of our monthly themes, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. You are welcome to link a post that you wrote earlier, or to “repurpose” an older post.

Why are the posts moderated?

The only way to prevent spammers from adding posts to the collection is to moderate them all. So please be patient; your post will be added as quickly as possible.

Please remember that off-topic posts will not be added to the collection. You are welcome to contact me if you are unsure whether your post is relevant to the topic or not.

How often can I participate?

You are welcome to participate in as many, or as few, Genealogy Blog Parties as you would like.

Can I submit more than one post to a GBP?

Yes. You may add up to 3 posts to a collection, as long as they adhere to the topic. You will need to add each link to the collection individually.

Why does my post have to include an image?

Because if you don’t include an image, your post’s thumbnail will be empty (and nobody likes an empty thumbnail). Besides, potential readers will be more inclined to click on your post if you include a cool image. If your post does not have an image, you are welcome to use the GBP ad image.

Is there a maximum number of participants for each GBP?

Not at this time.

Can I add a post that advertises my own products or services for sale?

This is a tough one. If your post is nothing more than an advertisement for your product or service for sale, then no. That is considered off-topic. However, if your post is relevant to the topic and happens to mention your product or service for sale in passing, then it is ok.

I added a post, but it is not showing up. What happened?

If you added your post using the InLinkz form, it will go into moderation and should show up in the collection within 24 hours. If it does not, then one or more of the following probably happened:

  • Your post was off-topic.
  • Your post was just an advertisement for your product or service for sale.
  • I did not receive the email from InLinkz telling me to check for moderated posts.

You are always welcome to contact me if you have a question about your post.

Why do I have to visit other blogs and leave comments?

The short answer: Because parties are meant to be social. And you can’t be social without talking to the other guests.

The long answer: When we visit another person’s blog, read what s/he wrote, and leave a comment, we validate that person’s hard work and encourage him/her to keep going. Your comments don’t have to be long and inspirational or offer constructive research assistance. Sometimes just saying, “Hey, good job!” is enough. Think of it as taking a walk in the genealogy blogging community and saying hello to your neighbors.

Some of your themes are really goofy and about TV shows I don't watch. Will they always be like that?

Probably not. But I like TV, and I reserve the right to be goofy. 🙂

Seriously though, most of the “TV themes” include a modification for non-show-watchers. Hopefully there will be a little something for everyone.

Can I suggest a topic for a future GBP?

Yes, you are welcome to send your suggestions to me, but I cannot guarantee that your topic will be selected.

I have a question that is not answered here.

Please drop me a line, and I’ll do my best to answer it for you.
